Geraldton’s newest tavern opened up last month, with local long time operator Sumit Prajapati at the helm. Canford were engaged by Sumit back in early 2021 to assist in obtaining the tavern restricted licence, as well as advising on kitchen / bar compliance.
The type of licence being applied for meant a public interest assessment was to be undertaken, and objective witness evidence submissions were required.
The public interest assessment drafted on behalf for Sumit focused quite intently on the redevelopment of the foreshore precinct where his tavern would be located, as well as his desire to create a tavern space that felt up-market and met the modern vision of the precinct the City of Greater Geraldton had created.

Using the above as the focus of the submissions, and with the very positive sentiments received from the large pool of questionnaire respondents, the application was lodged with the Licensing Authority, and no objections were received. The application was then conditionally granted.
Through the above process, Canford worked swiftly on obtaining the relevant Council approvals. With the conditional grant Sumit could move confidently towards completing the premises fit-out.
As of early October, The Foreshore opened to the Geraldton public. From all accounts it looks like the first couple weeks of trade have been received well by the community. We always have an affinity for working on regional projects, and we are glad to have been able to assist Sumit. Best of luck for the future!
