NSW Live Music Funding
& What It Means for Hospitality Venues

The New South Wales Government has recently announced a $3.8 million funding round to support 33 live music venues across regional and metropolitan NSW. The funding will assist venue operators with projects relating to venue enhancements designed to improve the customer experience.

This latest investment forms part of the State Government’s broader strategy to strengthen the night-time economy and support live entertainment venues facing ongoing economic pressures. The announcement follows several years of reform aimed at encouraging hospitality activation, increasing entertainment opportunities and creating more vibrant town and city centres throughout New South Wales.

Opportunities Beyond Funding – For venue operators, funding announcements such as this are often a catalyst for broader investment decisions.

Many hospitality businesses are considering:

  • Introducing live music and entertainment programs
  • Extending trading hours
  • Undertaking venue refurbishments
  • Expanding food and beverage offerings
  • Improving outdoor activation areas
  • Installing new sound, lighting and visual systems
  • Redeveloping under-utilised areas of existing venues

However, before these projects can proceed, operators will need to obtain planning, developments, health and liquor licensing approvals.

Planning and Licensing Considerations

One of the most common challenges facing hospitality operators is understanding how planning and liquor licensing requirements interact.

A project that appears straightforward may require:

  • Development approval from the local council
  • Modification of an existing development consent
  • Acoustic assessments
  • Traffic and parking assessments
  • Liquor licence applications
  • Extended trading authorisations
  • Primary Service Authorisations
  • Entertainment-related approvals
  • Community consultation

Addressing these requirements early significantly reduces approval timeframes, stress and timeline blowouts.
