Canford was contacted back in June of 2024 by UWA Sports. The group was looking for assistance in acquiring a liquor licence for the Neil Donaldson Pavilion. The pavilion is located in the UWA Sports Park, and has views of the ovals where rugby, football, and track and field events are held. As the premises is primarily used for playing and viewing sport, UWA Sports was intending to acquire a Special Facility Licence (Sports Arena).
The new Neil Donaldson Pavilion will be providing new, modern, functional, and universal amenities to service the needs of UWA Sports and its affiliated clubs and users. The key amenities in the new pavilion include a function room with balcony allowing for uninterrupted views of the sports, a servery and kitchen, office space, and an improved landscape and access to the sports precinct.
The pavilion’s potential impact on UWA’s sports landscape has been eagerly anticipated by the UWA Sports community. The pavilion’s modern amenities, quality finishes and versatile spaces will cater to a range of sports and community activities. These enhancements will create an optimal environment for athletes to excel and for the community to engage in a variety of recreational pursuits.
Canford was able to assist in resolving issues surrounding Section 46 of the Liquor Control Act, and the actual definition of a sports arena. Racing, Gaming and Liquor (RGL) had initially pushed for a Tavern Restricted Licence, but this did not align with the development approval. Attempting to amend the development approval after the fact would have been too time consuming and problematic.
The licence has been conditionally approved as of February, this year. Once the council has issued their final building and health approval, the Neil Donaldson Pavilion will be able to open and trade under their new licence.
Canford has enjoyed continuing our relationship that we have developed with UWA. This is the second job we have completed for the university, the first being Wonil Hotel on Hackett Drive.
The pavilion, having opened on Saturday the 12th of April, is open and operating just in time for the beginning of the upcoming football season. Thank you to UWA Sports for the opportunity to be a part of this licensing application.
