Lucky Dragon Liquor
Rodney Wong reached out to Canford back in 2020 looking for assistance in opening up a liquor store with an Asian focus. Canford was involved in lengthy design and planning discussions before arriving at a solution which Council would support.
Canford were engaged to make the liquor store licence application and construct Rodney’s public interest submissions. In writing these submissions, Canford first submitted ‘locality’ submissions to the Licensing Authority, successfully arguing that Roe Highway (to the store’s west) should be considered a physical boundary that separates Lucky Dragon Liquor’s locality and community from those that reside on the other side of this main road, and the bushland to the store’s east effectively did the same thing.
Along the way, we had an encounter with the Liquor Enforcement Unit regarding security, but after a brief discussion the project moved ahead smoothly.
From here, Canford wrote public interest submissions which included a strong mystery shop exercise confirming the unique offering Rodney was putting forward, and a witness evidence strategy that gathered a significant number of local community members who signalled that they had a desire and requirement for this liquor store and it’s unique offering.
The application was eventually approved with no feedback or intervention from any objectors or intervenors. The brand new liquor store will open in late September.
This liquor store will have a dedicated Asian Liquor area, which will be worth checking out. This section of the liquor store will have a special range of Asian liquor including a range of different flavoured soju, South Korean rice wine, Japanese and Korean plum wine, sake, shochu. On top of this the store will stock an extensive range of international beers, and an extensive range of international whisky’s, namely, Japanese, American, Canadian, Scottish, and Irish.
As this project had been in the works for over 5 years, we are glad to have finally brought Rodney this win. They will be located next door to the Maida Vale IGA – be sure to keep an eye out for them.
