Blue Poppy Lounge (formerly Zomsa Bar) is a small bar located in Northbridge, aiming to cater to all people and cultures. Throughout the night Blue Poppy Lounge transforms itself into an intimate party atmosphere and venue, with DJ’s mixing through music from mainstream popular dance music showcasing artists from Bhutan, Nepal, India, and Tibet.
Canford assisted Blue Poppy Lounge with extending their trading hours to allow them to operate until 2am on Saturday mornings, Sunday mornings, and Monday mornings preceding public holidays.
This process required extensive public interest submissions and objective evidence work. We needed to provide proof that the local community of those who attend the premises wanted the option to stay at the venue past midnight.
Throughout the process we emphasised the idea that Blue Poppy Lounge is a community small bar, as it’s locals believe it is, and that staying open late was the preference for people who attended the venue.
Blue Poppy Lounge opened their doors in August of 2024. After opening, they began to notice a trend of people coming to the venue later on in the evening. With patrons arriving to Blue Poppy Lounge at around 10 or 11 at night. Due to their Small Bar Licence, they were having to usher their patrons out at midnight, leaving the guests disgruntled and dissatisfied. This pushed the owners to apply for an Extended Trading Permit to try to ensure the satisfaction of their patrons. The applicant desired to be able to trade late like many other venues in Northbridge.
Throughout the process there were no objections or interventions received during the advertising period, helping to reflect the communities support of the Extended Trading Permit and the venue.
Thank you to Dawa Tshering and the team for the opportunity to help in the application of your Small Bar Licence and Extended Trading Permit. We’re excited to see the business continue to grow.
